The front door is touched before anything else. Before the hall floor, before the light switch, before the kettle. On a wet evening in January the hand goes out for it in the half dark, and whatever is there is the first thing the house says. A pull handle says one thing: it does not turn, it does not click, you take hold of it and lean, and the door comes with you. A lever says another. It moves under the fingers, the latch gives, and you are in. Neither is right in the abstract. Some doors want the weight of a long pull that can be read from the pavement; some want the plainness of a lever that matches the rest of the house behind it.
The hall, and its cupboards
Then the hall, which is where hardware starts to multiply without anyone noticing. Coat cupboard, meter cupboard, the door to the downstairs loo, the door through to the kitchen. Four or five pieces of metal within a few steps of one another, usually bought years apart, usually in three finishes that were each described as brass. This is the surface most houses forget: not the walls or the floor, but the small set of things at hand height that were never chosen together, each sensible on the day it was bought and senseless as a set.
The quiet trick is repetition. One lever family, one finish, run through the whole hall and onwards. Not because matching is a virtue in itself, but because a door you stop noticing is a door that is doing its job. Satin brass does this well; it is brushed and golden, and like any brushed metal it carries the marks of use more kindly than a mirror finish; it sits happily against most paint colours. Antique brass does it with more shadow. Both run across the door hardware range and on across cabinet and lighting. Either way the hall stops looking like a drawer of odd keys.
The rooms behind the hall
The living room double doors are the ceremonial pair. Two levers facing one another across a narrow gap look better when they are the same lever, and better still when they are the same lever the hall already has. This is a plain passage set: latch, no lock, and the pleasure is in the click.
Bedrooms are passage doors too, mostly. Few people lock a bedroom in a family house, and the lever there is a morning object: touched in the dark at six, again at eleven with a cup of tea. If you want a surface that remembers that, this is where unlacquered brass earns its reputation. It arrives bright and starts to soften within weeks exactly where the fingers land, deepening over the months to a warm honey brown, and after some years the bedroom door reads as though it has always been there. In a house that runs a sealed finish everywhere else, one living door can be a deliberate exception.
The bathroom asks for the one thing a bedroom does not: privacy. A turn or a button on the inside, no key to lose. It is the one mechanism guests will use, so it should feel decisive rather than fiddly. The study, or whichever room holds the paperwork, is where a mortice key set still makes sense: a lock that turns with a proper key, an escutcheon around it, the sound of it at the end of the day. And the back door, the one that gets used most, deserves the same lever as the front, because the family come in that way and the finish should not change on them. The small things
Doors are not only handles. There is the stop that keeps a lever off a plaster wall, the hinge that carries the door’s whole weight and shows a sliver of itself when it stands open, the snib on a bathroom door. These are the pieces most likely to be left as they were found: a plastic-domed stop, hinges painted over three times, a keyhole plate in a different colour from everything else. Replacing them takes an afternoon, and it is where a house quietly tips from mostly done to done. A solid brass door stop in the same finish as the lever is one of those things nobody remarks on and everybody registers.
What one finish does to a house
Walk it in your head at the end of a day, front to back. If the hand meets the same weight and the same colour of metal at each door, the house holds together in a way you would struggle to point at. Visitors will say the house feels calm, or finished, and not know that they mean the doors. Nothing dramatic. Just the same quiet answer, everywhere in the house you reach for one.
